Drug discovery today is a very high risk with low probability of success. One of the most critical factors in making this process so unpredictable is the inability of scientists to properly understand the efficacy and toxicity of drugs until mid-late stage clinical trials and in some cases, much after the product has been released. Diseases are multi-factorial systems and involve multiple key cell types and intracellular processes. In-vitro models are used to screen for targets and identify compounds. Animal models are the drivers for decisions to go to clinical trials. Both these surrogates have weaknesses. In-vitro models do not capture the multiple cell type interactions and the intracellular activity so important in disease pathophysiology. Animal models have different physiologies, thresholds and different phenotypes than human diseases.
Cellworks technology is human physiology virtualization of relevant single and co-culture cell systems. These systems can be customized to different environmental conditions/triggers, patient sub-groups based on mutation profiles and signaling differences. The ability to screen high throughput % Knockdown, % Over-expression and drug experiments with quantitative transparency across all disease relevant processes and markers is a unique competency. The predictive experiments readouts have been prospectively correlated with cell line and in-vivo experiments by external collaborators and partners.
