About Us - Science Focus Board

Dean of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine as well as the CEO of Center for Cellular and Molecular Platforms in NCBS Bangalore. In January 2000 he joined the University of Iowa, Carver College of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and set up the structural biology program. He also served as Assistant Dean and Director of Core Research Facilities at the College of Medicine. In 2009, Dr. Ramaswamy joined NCBS.

Dr. Ramaswamy completed his PhD from the Molecular Biophysics Unit, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He performed Post doctoral activities at the Department of Molecular Biology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Biomedical Center in Uppsala, Sweden. He has published over sixty peer reviewed scientific papers and a number of review articles.

He recently developed a novel THIOMAB technology platform to obtain engineered Antibody Drug Conjugates with improved therapeutic index. In addition, his group is also involved in identification of novel tumor antigens and developing therapeutic antibodies for targeted cancer therapy. Dr. Junutula joined Genentech, Inc. in 2001.

Junutula obtained his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1997 at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India under the guidance of Dr. Appaji Rao. He then moved to Dr. Wolfgang Wintermeyer's laboratory in Germany and followed by Dr. Richard Scheller's laboratory at Stanford University. He has published over 40 peer-reviewed publications/patents and presented his work at numerous international conferences. Junutula was a recipient of Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship, INSA (Indian National Science Academy) young scientist award for the outstanding graduate research work amongst others.

He is responsible for multiple groups within Rigel's research arm, including Functional Screening, High Content Screening and the Muscle programs. He was involved with Rigel since it's founding, first as a consultant and then as a scientist in the department of Immunology where he played a critical role in establishing Rigel's original flagship technology for screening retroviral cDNA and peptide libraries for novel drug targets.

He has held various positions within Rigel and functioned in project leader and director roles for external collaborations and internal programs within Immunology, Virology, Discovery & Muscle. Todd obtained is Ph.D. in Molecular Pharmacology in 1999 at Stanford University in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Nolan where he conducted research on HIV.
